Marble Falls fifth-graders host Fredericksburg to decide youth football title
The Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer fifth-graders are playing Fredericksburg for the Hill Country Youth Football League championship at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs reached the championship game by shutting out Smithson Valley Blue 16-0 Nov. 9 and crushing Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch Navy 34-6 Nov. 2.
Marble Falls coach T.J. Crawford noted that eliminating Smithson Valley wasn’t easy.
“Smithson Valley has football players,” he said.
To shorten the game and tire out the Rangers, Marble Falls relied on its rushing attack. The result was two scoring runs by R.J. Wendt inside the five-yard line both times.
“Short run plays were set up by big run plays,” Crawford said.
The Mustangs’ strength, however, may be on the other side of the ball.
“All year long, we’re disciplined on defense,” he said. “Do your job and play for your spot. We’ve given up three touchdowns all year. In every game, we’ve dominated or stayed in it every time.”
Fredericksburg posted shutouts in its two postseason games: Burnet 44-0 Nov. 2 and Lampasas 26-0 Nov. 9.
The championship contest is a rematch of a Fredericksburg win against Marble Falls 14-0 in the opening contest of the season. That’s the Mustangs’ only loss.
“We’re prepared to have the same dogfight,” Crawford said. “I’m very proud of the boys. From where we came from, I think we have a good team. We’re excited.”
